  • Patty Brard's tribute to Hans van Hemert (October 7th and 15th)

On October 7th, Patty posted a message on social media to pay tribute to her former Pygmalion, the legendary record producer Hans van Hemert, who passed away.

"What sad news today! Sadly, Hans van Hemert has passed away. I’m grateful for the opportunities I received early in my career thanks to him! I wish his dear partner Willy, the children, and grandchildren much strength and all the best. 🤍💫 #hits #luv #mouthandmacneal #kamahl and more. Rest in peace, Hans! ❤️ P.S. I never understood why you thought ELO was such a good band!" the diva wrote on Facebook and Instagram.

La Brard illustrated her message with a photo taken with Hans earlier this year at the premiere of her Videoland series during the Huishoudbeurs (Houseware Fair) at Amsterdam's RAI convention center.

In 1976, Hans had the idea to form the girl group Luv', and Patty was the first member to be recruited. Initially, Hans and Patty were briefly and secretly romantically involved at the beginning of Luv's career. Tensions arose between them when Patty unexpectedly left Luv' in July 1980. Over the years, they reconciled, but often found themselves in conflict. They even had a short-lived romantic reunion in the 1990s.

Patty and other Dutch celebrities (including André van Duin, Ciska Peters and her husband, the former Luv's manager Pim ter Linde, Vivian Boelen, Tineke de Nooij and Sjoukje Smit (aka Maggie MacNeal) attended Hans' funeral in Blaricum, the Netherlands, on October 15th.

  • Patty Brard shocked by Will Koopman's interview in Mezza (October 5th)

The October 5th edition of Mezza magazine, a weekend supplement to AD and other local newspapers from DPG Media, featured an interview with Will Koopman, who directed "PATTY", a series based on Patty Brard's life in six episodes, which premiered on February 18th. The show had a strong start on RTL's streaming platform and even reached the number 1 spot. Moreover, the premiere episode aired on RTL 4 to encourage viewers to watch the rest of the series on Videoland. According to Dutch audience measurement firm NMO (Nationaal Media Onderzoek), the first episode drew 921,000 viewers on RTL 4, capturing a 22.2% market share. It ranked #7 on the Dag Top 25, the daily list of the 25 most popular TV shows in the Netherlands. On Videoland, the series performed reasonably well, though it didn’t quite become the mega-hit that had been anticipated.

Eva van de Wijdeven’s portrayal of Patty's later years had serious vibes of RTL 4's popular sketch comedy variety show "De TV Kantine", which spoofed Dutch celebrities. The older Patty, wearing a fat suit to play the diva when she was overweight, looked in the series as if Carlo Boszhard had styled her in a carnival-esque way.

Antoinnette Scheulderman, who co-wrote Patty's memoirs in 2020, interviewed Will Koopman for Mezza. Antoinnette said to Will: " I didn’t consider your series PATTY as strong as other shows you directed like "Oogappels" or "Alles op Tafel". It made me think "Oh, Will’s lost her touch'".

Will revealed some of her frustrations regarding the production. "Well, it also came down to budget issues. We had only eight days of shooting per episode, and in Spain, we had to shoot 250 shots in four days. On the flight back, I thought, "Never again!" the sought-after director declared.

When asked why she did it anyway, Will answered: "Because I found the Patty's Luv-era so interesting. But I needed more time and money to do it well. I think Holly Brood (who portrayed the younger Patty) and the other actresses did well, but, to be honest, that series could have been better. And that does bother me.

Patty rapidly reacted on Instagram and wrote on October 5th: "I just spoke with Will Koopman about an article that appeared in a newspaper today, where she mentioned that if she’d had more time and budget, she could have made an even better version of the series PATTY. But that simply wasn’t possible! Period! Will and I are both still proud of how the series turned out and genuinely happy with the final result! If you haven’t watched the series yet, we wholeheartedly recommend you do! PATTY is available to stream in full on @videolandonline. Have a great weekend, everyone! ❤️❤️❤️"

Will Koopman later responded on her Instagram: "Today, there’s quite a bit of talk about the series PATTY. First of all, I’m still more than happy with the series, as well as with the entire cast and crew and my collaboration with Patty. Together, we created a truly wonderful series! Of course, if there had been more time and budget, it could have been even better, but that’s just how it goes in our line of work: the higher the budget, the greater the possibilities! We’re all still proud of what we managed to create within the available resources. That was the context of my conversation with Mezza. Nothing more, nothing less! Have a great weekend, and if you haven’t seen the series PATTY yet, I highly recommend it. You can stream it in full on Videoland! Patty and I wish you lots of viewing pleasure! ❤️"

  • Patty's comeback on Shownieuws ? (October 26th)

Patty appeared again as a showbiz expert on yesterday's edition of SBS6's infotainment program "Shownieuws," alongside anchor Manuel Venderbos and fellow specialists Bart Ettekoven and William Rutten. Earlier this year, the larger-than-life media personality left Shownieuws for unclear reasons. Last month, she was a guest on the program to discuss various topics, including her daughter's wedding. Does this mean that Dutch viewers might see Patty on Shownieuws more often in the future?
