PATTY series: media coverage, premiere and reviews

Dernière mise à jour : 10 mars

The premiere of "PATTY", a Videoland series based on Patty Brard's life, recently generated a lot of publicity in the Dutch media.

The latest issue of VARAgids featured an eight-page article about the diva, including an interview with Hans van Hemert and Piet Souer, who created the legendary girl group in late 1976.

Other Dutch TV guides (TV Krant, TV Film, Televizier, Avrobode, Mikro Gids, TrosKompas, Veronica Superguide) published articles about the series.

In addition to its paper edition, Veronica Superguide posted several articles related to the series on its website. Click here to find and read them.

Holland's most-read newspaper, De Telegraaf, mentioned "PATTY" in its February 16th, 17th, and 19th editions.

Patty's Videoland series had a festive premiere at the Huishoudbeurs (houseware fair) at the RAI Amsterdam on February 18th. La Brard, her husband Antoine van de Vijver, and her daughter Priscilla Nasi were present. The cast of the series, including Holly Mae Brood and Eva van de Wijdeven, as well as other celebrities, including Gerard Joling and Connie Witteman, attended the party. Her ex-Luv' colleagues, José Hoebee and Marga Scheide, didn't come, as they are not on good terms with Miss Brard. Her former Pygmalion, Hans van Hemert, surprised everybody when he appeared during the premiere.

Reviews

PATTY received a mixed response from critics.

RTL Boulevard's entertainment expert, Rob Goossens, was disappointed in the series. "We have already received the photos of the actors in recent months, and I had prepared myself for a big, over-the-top comedy, but the first episodes were dramatic, and it was so different than I expected. I'm confused about the big contrast between the older and newer episodes. They invested so much of their budget into the first episodes about Luv' and the jet set years that they had no money for the next episodes. It was as if they borrowed a fat suit from "Austin Powers" for Eva van de Wijdeven, who plays older Patty. It doesn't look right, and it's distracting," Goossens said.

Media journalist Jarco Kriek wrote on X: "Last night, I only watched "PATTY" on Videoland for half an hour. I couldn't take it anymore. The real Patty Brard is a great woman. She deserves better".

AD reviewer Peter van Brummelen gave the series only three out of five stars. He explained: "As a viewer, you have to get used to the atmosphere, which is much more subdued than you would expect in a series about the larger-than-life Brard, but you quickly go along with it". There is a major blunder in the series. When Patty came to the Netherlands in the 1960s, she immediately became a big fan of the Golden Earring. "When she attends a concert of the group - this scene happens in the 1960s - the song "Twilight Zone" can be heard. The Earring released this track much later, in 1982. The screenwriter and director of the series should have googled this detail," Van Brummelen added.

According to NRC reviewer Wilfred Takken, who only gave two out of five stars, the series was "sometimes entertaining but not good enough". The dramatic aspect appeared late and was not properly developed.

According to the Volkskrant, "there was enough dramatic material in "PATTY", but the scenes were superficial, and the dialogues were uninteresting".
